An unexpected road trip to their home town in Poland enables two women to confront their traumas and build themselves anew.
Ada (Dagmara Domińczyk) is an American investigative journalist of Polish descent. Recently moved to Hamburg to start a family, she’s struggling to find herself in the new reality. Suddenly a mysterious package lands on her desk – an autobiographical book about a harrowing childhood trauma, with a personalized inscription. Mysterious sender turns out to be Roksana (Katarzyna Warnke), a girl she once knew in her Silesian hometown. Ada embarks on her last journalistic adventure before maternity leave: she’s going to describe her friend’s gripping story. But once they get to Poland, nothing is what it seems. And Roksana’s mother Karolina (Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik) is determined to guard the past with every fiber of her being: whatever happened, will never see the light of the day.
Ada (44) is an American investigative journalist of Polish descent. She has just moved from the US to Germany to start a new life with Tommy (38). The couple has met while covering the war in Ukraine and is now expecting their first child. Ada, who’s previously led an intense and adrenaline-fuelled life, finds it hard to adjust. She can’t figure out how to navigate the new reality, and having lost her usual source of empowerment – work – her sense of self feels lost too. The prospect of motherhood, however very much desired, puts an extra pressure on the protagonist.
While the nappies and sleepless nights are still in the future, Ada tries to settle in Hamburg, where she works in the editorial department of a newspaper, writing essays. One day a mysterious package arrives, and weirdly, the addressee is herself. Inside – a book called “Non-Memoir”, shocking recollections of a woman, sexually abused by her father when she was still a child. The book, written under a pseudonym, is dedicated specifically to Ada. With some effort, she manages to trace the author. It is Ada’s childhood friend Roksana (44) from their native Silesian village in Poland.
Roksana asks Ada for a meeting. She wants them to travel together to their hometown, where her mother, the silent witness of her childhood hell, still lives. The woman hopes to confront her and get a confession. She believes Ada will help her get it. The journalist decides to embark on her last investigative journey before the maternal leave and describe the story in a report. However, its subject will be not Roksana, the victim, not the perpetrator father but the silent witness, Karolina (70). Ada’s partner is not overjoyed with the plan, claiming she’s running away from intimacy and commitment. Ada sticks to her guns, which only deepens the divide.
Back in Poland it turns out that Karolina is in full denial, a firm guardian of family secrets perpetrating an image of an ideal husband and a perfect family. The complicated relationship with Roksana and the mother’s shielded, introverted personality makes it difficult for Ada to get the necessary insights. In addition, contemporary traumas open long forgotten wounds and the journalist has to confront her own personal, traumatic memories. Thanks to Roksana she learns that years ago, her own mother, who failed to start anew in the US and returned to Poland leaving Ada behind, drank herself to death. Amongst the darkness and disarray a toxic erotic tension develops between two childhood friends.
Travel Essentials is a feature debut of Kamila Tarabura, young Polish director already nominated for one of the country’s most prestigious cultural awards Paszporty Polityki. Representing Poland’s new generation of filmmakers, Tarabura has been an artistic protege of Polish film legend Agnieszka Holland, with whom, alongside Katarzyna Warzecha, she’s worked on the internationally celebrated The Green Border (2023). They’ve also co-created Absolute Beginners (2023), a warmly received Netflix’ fresh coming-of-age series about a neurodiverse, creative teen. Tarabura’s short film Into the Night has won international recognition in 2020/21.
In her feature debut, the director chose to collaborate with three outstanding women artists. Dagmara Domińczyk, Polish-born American actor known from smash hit Succession has proven her versatility and charisma with recent roles in The Lost Daughter and Priscilla. Co-writer Katarzyna Warnke is one of Poland’s brightest contemporary stars, an expert in strong women protagonists. Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik (Venice officially selected Woman of…, Sundance contender Prime Time) – a true legend both in film and theater, lauded for her ability to encompass the most complex emotions. Making her debut feature with a mostly female crew, a vibrant and compassionate look at the intricacy of women’s relationships, sexuality and childhood trauma, director Kamila Tarabura paints a gripping, painful and deeply universal portrait of women’s strength and the ability to build oneself anew.
Travel Essentials, Kamila Tarabura’s feature debut, produced by our team, was awarded the Sapphire Lions in the Perspectives Competition at the 49th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. Kamila also received a special mention in the Best Directorial Debut or Second Film category.
The jury praised Travel Essentials for its “remarkable combination of screenplay, direction, cinematography, and acting, addressing the theme of self-destruction in a universally compelling manner with a consistent cinematic approach.” Additionally, Kamila Tarabura won the Dr Irena Eris Cosmetics Award for “The Boldest Vision.”
For me, Travel Essentials is, above all, a universal story of fighting for the truth, because without truth, without acknowledging injustice, constructing an identity is impossible. And it’s not about a simple conviction that confessing the truth is a sudden liberation, because it’s not. But certainly, it can be the beginning of building oneself anew and learning to relive sensory experiences anew.
Travel Essentials is an elevated drama, representing womanhood and female sexuality. We use well known pop culture codes deliberately: two women in the car, a pub, a lover, a gas station, a motel. The structure of a road movie is combined with a relevant psychological theme – the struggle for identity. I like to think of our film as the reverse of Thelma & Louise: instead of best friends, we have two women who are strangers to each other, but who hold a mirror to each other as they travel back to the place where they grew up to confront their traumas. Both protagonists lead affluent lives. They have caring partners, beautiful houses, but they still feel empty at some point. When writing the script, I set myself the goal of capturing the sadness of adult life. A sadness that is not visible at first glance, but which is hidden under the surface of smiles and a seemingly prosperous life. They have to move each other out of limbo, so that their supposedly arranged life is not superficial, without feeling, or without stability.
